Ellis stood still as the world obeyed his command.

He could hear families in houses on either side of this one. They were watching television, eating dinner, laughing and chatting.

He heard the thunderous heartbeats of two werewolves in their war forms.

There was a persistent drip, drip, drip of blood as it hit the carpet. The smell of it was potent, but not enough to distract Ellis. He was well-fed, and it’d take more than that to get him started, but he had no way to know the state Baxter was in.

If Baxter was still alive.

“Baxter?” he said, as calmly as he could.

“What?” It was an unfamiliar voice, almost a squeak, and it came from a space where there was no pulse.

Ellis’ fingers flexed.

He’d heard Randall’s pain and stepped in to stop things, but now there was a witness, and Ellis would have to handle this incredibly carefully or he’d be well and truly up shit creek.

He turned to face the unknown werewolf. “You’re outnumbered,” he said. He kept his tone conversational. Reasonable. He was going to pass this off as an element of surprise if he could. And if not? Eh. He didn’t have time to think that far ahead. “You can’t win this now. I know you’re not unintelligent. Think about this carefully.”

The beast’s breathing was hard, heavy. A whine caught in his throat for a second, before he eliminated it.

God, Ellis wanted to know more. Who the hell was this bloke? Why was he staking vampires? Where the hell did he take them? How did he get into chaotic brawls in people’s homes without the neighbours hearing a thing?

He could arrest the creature. Right here, right now, he could force it to surrender and to take his human shape. He could question the man, not the beast, and find out everything they needed from him.

All he had to do was use Devitt’s power again.

And then explain how he’d obtained it. To Aaron, to the Council, to the Constabulary. And then the knowledge would be out there. People would understand why the law against cannibalism was in place, and all it would take would be a few angry fledglings or some greedy individuals and the city would sink into chaos as they all fought to eat each other while they scrambled for power. The Council and Constabulary had the edge there: they knew what everyone’s power was, and where to find them. The Constabulary even had the opportunity, as they were undertaking a mass audit right now and could write off anyone they killed as absent when they checked on them. With a werewolf on the loose, who would care?

Devitt wanted power so that he could rule. Christ alone knew what anyone else would use it for.

His jaw rocked slowly. Blood fell still. The werewolves weren’t healing, or if they were it was much slower than it should be.

He couldn’t do it. He didn’t dare do it. He bared his teeth in frustration and stepped back out of the room, his hand to the wall for guidance.
